What is CaTLI?
The California Transportation and Logistics Institute (CaTLI) is a unique partnership of the state’s transportation and logistics (T&L) businesses and organizations with California’s Community College (CC) and California State University (CSU) Systems.
The CaTLI was formed to address the employment needs of the T&L Industry¹ which has become one of the fastest growing, high-demand industries in California since the High-Tech Industry’s growth in the Silicon Valley. Southern California alone is projected to add about 350,000 logistics jobs by 2030. However, there is a short supply of skilled workers to fill the increasing number of high paying jobs in this sector of our economy.
The Institute’s mission is to promote the growth of careers in the T&L industry in California and address the rapidly growing need for skilled workers. To support both job seekers and incumbent workers, CaTLI will develop a single, articulated continuum of “industry driven and certified” logistics training and education. The continuum begins with introductory and career development programs at the high school level followed by noncredit and A.S. degree courses within the community colleges and a facilitated transfer process to University four year and graduate degree programs.
The continuum of courses is being developed through the collaboration of transportation and logistics businesses and organizations and California’s education system:
- The participating T&L businesses and organizations will work closely with the CCs and CSUs to define a set of requirements for T&L training and education. They will review existing curriculum available at the CCs and CSUs to determine fit, identify current gaps and help the schools develop new courses to meet the industry’s growing needs for qualified workers.
- The Chancellor of the state’s Community College System has committed the organization’s resources to work with the industry to develop T&L industry driven courses that are recognized by the industry and its associations as “certified”. The CCs will share the curriculum across all interested CC campuses state wide.
- The Chancellor of the California State University System has committed to work with the CCs to develop an articulation program to facilitate the transition of students from CCs to CSU four year and graduate programs.
- Selected high schools will also participate in CaTLI by hosting five new T&L Academies designed to inform students of career opportunities in logistics.
CaTLI will serve as a national leadership model for training workers for emerging, fast growing industries like Transportation & Logistics or for professions such as nursing that is experiencing chronic shortages of qualified people. Initially, CaTLI will focus on Southern California where the majority of the state’s transportation and logistics industry jobs can be found. After a successful rollout in this region, CaTLI will be expanded to the entire state, and potentially even nationwide.
¹ The T&L Industry includes four segments: Air, Water, Road and Rail. Each segment is composed of five sectors: Transportation, Logistics Support, Warehousing and Storage, Supply Chain Management and Safety and Security.
How will CaTLI be promoted and communicated to students, incumbent workers and workers in transition?
We will leverage LAEDC’s resources and use many of the traditional means to promote CaTLI and communicate its message including:
- Print media
- Television
- LAEDC’s and CaTLI’s websites
- Links from key sites such as the California’s Employment Development Department
- Marketing collateral (i.e.: flyers, brochures, press kits, press releases)
- Speaking engagements
- Meet and greet opportunities
However, the primary means of promoting and communicating CaTLI will be through a web-based portal that is being built through the collaboration of the participating organizations:
- Companies in the T&L industry will be able to market their companies and list available jobs.
- High Schools, CCs and CSUs will be able to market their schools and their available T&L industry driven training and education that is required to obtain industry jobs and advancements.
The CaTLI portal will:
- Provide innovative, one stop career planning for individuals seeking employment or incumbent workers seeking advancement in the Transportation and Logistics industry.
- Serve as an information clearing house for anyone seeking to learn T&L industry including such information as:
- Industry organization, size, growth, etc.
- Current industry events and news
- List of upcoming industry events and seminars
- Company profiles
- Job profiles
- Worker success stories
Who will the CaTLI portal serve?
The portal will allow free access to the primary user community - all “job seekers” who are interested in the T&L industry in California. This includes:
- Recent and future high school and college graduates
- Incumbent workers seeking advancement or job change
- Workers in transition seeking job opportunities
Job seekers will be able to:
- Assess their skills and knowledge and compare their self-assessment to a database of T&L jobs to discover jobs for which they are uniquely qualified and/or suited
- Research information about companies offering employment
- Search for jobs in the industry segment and sectors of their choosing in their local area or state wide
- Understand and compare the requirements for specific jobs including prior experience, training and education
- Understand the career path opportunities available to them and what training or education is required to rise to the next level
- Post their resume on the portal for companies to review
- Explore and compare specific T&L training, certificate programs and degree programs offered at high schools, community colleges and universities in their area
- Review profiles of each participating High School, CC and CSU
- Begin the process of applying for admission to a class, or program at participating institutions
In addition:
- Participating transportation and logistics companies and organizations will be able to market themselves and their career opportunities
- Participating high schools, the California Community College System and the California State University System will be able to promote their campuses and their industry driven transportation and logistics training and education
